SYDNEY SEA SLUG CENSUS - 2023

Did you know there are over 2,000 known sea slugs to date and many more to find!

Sea slugs make very good indicators of climate change because they are highly visible, have short lives, and are (relatively) easy to identify.

URG NSW performs yearly research of these highly colourful animals as part of our Sea Slug Census! You can participate by scuba diving, snorkelling or browsing the many rock pools around Sydney. The Sydney Sea Slug Census in 2023 will run over 2 weekends from Fri 10 Nov to Sun 19 Nov 2023.

REQUIREMENT

  • You must be a certified scuba diver to dive OR you can participate as a snorkeler or browsing the rock pools.

  • You need an underwater camera (or waterproof camera for snorkeler).

  • You can participate as an individual or as part of a dive team.

CENSUS GUIDELINE

  • Dive/snorkel site scope is Sydney; Geographic range from Port Hacking to Pittwater inclusive, with Bare Island as the main census site.

  • Take one photo of each species of sea slug you find in the 10 days period from 12am on Fri 10 Nov until 11.59pm on Sun 19 Nov 2023 within the dive site scope above. You don’t need to identify the slugs, just take their photos!

  • Crop the photos around the sea slug so it is nice and clear.

  • We ask you to upload your result to iNaturalist

  • Please see instructions on how to do this.
