About the event
Citizen science is as much about the “citizen” as it is the “science”. While many research projects are designed to discover something new, answer some unanswered questions or for solving a scientific mystery or problem, other projects, like Australasia Fishes, is simply about creating an accessible and useful scientific database, from which scientific research can develop.
All of this must be accomplished while keeping in mind that citizen scientist participants must be engaged partners in the project. Harry Rosenthal’s presentation will highlight some of the ways the Australasia Fishes citizen science project has become a useful tool in current marine research as well as how it strives to keep participants engaged in the project. The discussion will cover the story behind the recent release of the 700-page book, Field guide to Fishes of Sydney Harbour, and other projects which are “spinoffs” of Australasia Fishes.
