Photography Tips for improved underwater shots!

Pre-manual White Balance adj.  (this was with the "Underwater" feature )                 Post Manual White Balance Adj.

I just thought I would share this tip.  If you're like me, u probably don't have the $$$ to buy an expensive camera with strobes (in my case, my husband has hogged all the money for these toys), but are tired of the blue hue obtained when using the point and shoot cameras. Well whilst reading a recent diving article I was inspired to get aquainted with the manual white balance on my camera.  I have a little Canon Power Shot A610 with the Canon Housing. This camera has an underwater white balance feature, but the problem with this, is that it's only good for a certain depth and when you go deeper, the annoying blue hue returns!

First what you'll need to do, is look at ur camera manual and check to see if ur camera has Manual White Balance feature. If yes, then the second thing u'll need is a white dive slate.

For my Canon, what I do is:

1) Go to function

2) Go to White Balance (that's where u can have the different settings, like for sunny condition, cloudy condition....well the last feature is the manual white balance)

3) Then I point to my white dive slate, and press the "menu button" which then measures the white balance. If you forget the dive slate, u can point to the sand or grey gloves, and still get a half decent white balance. (Keep in mind, if you have a different camera, you may have to proceed in a different way).

4) As you change depth in ur dive, u'll have to regularly change the white balance.  (i.e. Ur white balance at 30 meters, will make things at 5meters, super red!)

5) Another helpful tip - an increased ISO setting in depth helps...i.e. ISO 400

6) Point away from the sun!

7) To see the difference, see the above pictures I took when I first discovered the Manual White Balance!  Who needs the expensive strobes eh?!

If you have any tips, please post them here, cuz I'm always looking for new ways to play with my little camera!

Cheers, Christine

Re: Photography Tips for improved underwater shots!

Thanks for this tip! It worked great for me.....I didn't know about the ISO setting so i will play that as well.

Just to show the difference, here is a couple of  pic's from me, all are taken with Fuji F11 with an Auto-Magic Filter.

  • One with Manual White Balance
  • One with Auto White Balance.
  • One at a greater deepth, with manual WB and the steps you used above

Re: Photography Tips for improved underwater shots!

Hey Christine

Recently I have been having trouble adjusting the manual white balance.  When I go to set it against the slate it says 'under' and wont set.  Usually this is happening at deeper depths approx 20m or deeper.  Have you ever had similar problems?

I have tried to move the camera closer and further away from the slate when I set it but that didn't seem to help at all.
